MMA ODDS AND ENDS FOR MONDAY: JON JONES VS. ANTHONY SMITH SET FOR UFC 235

The UFC has reserved argubaly the top fighter in the world to get a quick-turnaround bout, and I’ll give my thoughts on this brand new matchup in the present MMA odds and ends.
Jon Jones vs. Anthony Smith, UFC 235 UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will put his belt on the line against Anthony Smith at UFC 235, which takes place March 2 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. TMZ was the first to report about the bout, together with UFC president Dana White confirming the news with them. The holdup now is that Jones still needs to receive his license from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which should happen later this month after he has a hearing regarding his controversial failed drug test for picograms before UFC 232.
The information of Jones vs. Smith being booked for UFC 235 came along with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani reporting that Kamaru Usman is place to combat UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in UFC 235 in the co-main occasion. I wrote about that matchup in a week’s MMA odds and ends, which you can read here. The cole’s notes version of my ideas on that bout would be that Woodley deserves to become preferred based on the fact he is the defending champion, but I provide Usman a great chance to win the title.
So far as Jones vs. Smith goes, it’s clearly the right fight to book and it’s fantastic news the UFC is making this battle instead of Jones contrary to Corey Anderson, that wouldn’t happen to be a competitive fight. At least Smith gets the ending ability to make things interesting, though Jones will presumably still enter this fight as a gigantic betting favorite due to his incredible record and just how great he looked in his return bout against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232, he won through third-round KO.
Jones (23-1, 1 NC) has an unbelievable 17-1, 1 NC record in the Octagon which includes triumph over Daniel Cormier, Gustafsson twice, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, Mauricio”Shogun” Rua, Chael Sonnen and Vitor Belfort. By all accounts, he has among the best resumes we have ever seen in the sport and he’s looked pretty much unstoppable in his MMA career save for an extremely controversial DQ defeat to Matt Hamill nearly a decade ago now in December 2009. Smith (31-13) is among the most-improved fighters in the UFC. After racking up a 4-3 document as a middleweight during two separate stints at the UFC, Smith has burst into stardom as a light heavyweight since moving up a weight class in the center of 2018. He has defeated Shogun, Evans and in his very last conclusion Volkan Oezdemir all by end, making a title shot because of his unbelievable run at 205lbs.
As great as Smith has appeared at light heavyweight, it’s still impossible to prefer him to conquer Jones, who has shown hardly any flaws in his game since making his UFC debut over a decade ago. I’d search for Jones to be about a -500 favored for this fight, and considering Smith has been completed 14 times in his profession there’s a fantastic opportunity Jones stops him in this fight.

UFC 234: Whittaker vs. Gastelum

UFC 234 takes place on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia.

The principal card airs live on 10pm ET that is starting.
Robert Whittaker might be a mainstream celebrity, but the middleweight winner is a big frickin’ deal in his home state of Australia. The respectful Aussie should get a hero’s welcome in Melbourne when he defends his title against American Kelvin Gastelum in early February.
The two served as opposing coaches around The Ultimate Fighter 28 and were respectful as could be. Neither guy is much trash talker, also Whittaker has emerged as a anti-McGregor in the GSP mould: equal portions respectful and humble towards his enemies. It is honestly refreshing to see, with all these men puking garbage into microphones these days.
Also on the card is Israel Adesanya, whose swag and skills could catapult him into a title shot sooner than after. Drawing comparisons to some young Anderson Silva, The Last Stylebender will meet the now-old Anderson Silva in a fascinating middleweight bout. Silva came out and said he was promised a title shot with the triumph, which is surprising since the Brazilian has not had a relevant victory in years.
The remaining cards is still being filled out, but take a peek at the scheduled UFC 234 fights below, and be sure that you check in during fight week for in-depth betting previews on the best way best to gamble online. UFC FT. LAUDERDALE CARD UPDATES INCLUDING ALEX OLIVEIRA VS. MIKE PERRY

UFC Ft. Lauderdale is set to take place April 27 in BB&T Center, and the major event was anticipated to become a five-round middleweight bout between Yoel Romero and Ronaldo”Jacare” Souza. Unfortunately, Romero has pulled out with injury and the UFC is scrambling to find a new competitor for Souza. Some other bouts on the card have also seen changes happen, and I’ll give my first thoughts on them below.
Alex Oliveira vs. Mike Perry, UFC on ESPN 3
An exciting welterweight bout between Alex Oliveira and Mike Perry will happen at UFC on ESPN 3. ESPN first broke the news that Perry is filling in on short notice for the injured Li Jingliang.
Oliveira (19-6-1, 2 NC) is currently 9-4, 1 NC at the UFC and is coming from a barbarous entry loss to Gunnar Nelson in his final struggle. He is always in exciting fights win-or-lose, but is lacking that touch victory and has not yet demonstrated he can take another step in to contender status. Perry (12-4) has a 5-4 record in the UFC but was filed by Donald Cerrone in his final fight. Most of us know he’s knockout power, but he hasn’t shown much else apart from his punching power. This one could go either way as both men are offensively talented however defensively flawed. I’d have to favor Oliveira as he is better on the ground, but Perry is certainly live in this battle together with his KO power.
Carla Esparza vs. Virna Jandiroba, UFC on ESPN 3
Because of an accident to Livia Renata Souza, Carla Esparza will now face Virna Jandiroba in a women’s strawweight bout. Combate broke the news. Esparza (13-6) is the former UFC women’s strawweight champion and also has a 4-4 record overall from the Octagon, including a TKO loss to Tatiana Suarez in her last outing. Jandiroba (14-0) was the Invicta women’s strawweight champion after going 3-0 in the promotion. Esparza will likely be favored due to getting more UFC experience, but the unbeaten Jandiroba is absolutely a live dog in this fight.
Ben Saunders vs. Takashi Sato, UFC on ESPN 3
Additionally added to UFC on ESPN 3 is a welterweight bout between Ben Saunders and Takashi Sato. Asian MMA broke the information. Saunders (22-11-2) is just 2-4 in his third stint in the UFC, and is now coming off of back-to-back stoppage declines to Lyman Good and Sergio Moraes. He appears to be on rather the decrease. Sato (14-2) is a Pancrase vet who won his last struggle, but overall looks like a suspicious signing by the UFC. Given Saunders is out of Florida, possibly the UFC believes they are giving him a winnable battle here, but Sato may surprise and get the knockout win.
Gilbert Burns vs. Eric Wisely, UFC on ESPN 3
Lightweights Gilbert Burns and Eric Wisely are set to meet. Combate had the information. Burns (14-3) is 7-3 at the UFC and is coming off of a decision win over Olivier Aubin-Mercier. Wisely (30-9-1) is making his return to the Octagon after going unbeaten over his last nine fights in the regional circuit. He had one previous stint at the UFC back in 2012, when he went 0-2. This is a weird fight, and the only thing I can imagine is that no one wanted to combat Burns, that I anticipate to be a huge favorite to conquer Wisely.
Roosevelt Roberts vs. Thomas Gifford, UFC on ESPN 3
And finally, lightweights Roosevelt Roberts and Thomas Gifford will meet at UFC on ESPN 3. Roberts (7-0) has completed all his pro fights including a submission win over Darrell Horcher within his UFC debut. Gifford (14-7, 2 NC) is making his UFC debut after moving undefeated over his final five bouts on the regional circuit. Gifford appears to be a good possibility but Roosevelt has proven he can win in the UFC and I expect him to be preferred quite heavily in this one.
